SKY, ABC embroiled in overseas fight

SKY News Australia has approached the Federal Government about taking over diplomatic overseas television, of which Australia Channel run by the ABC is broadcasting under contract until 2011.

“Unlike the existing provider, we will operate on an inclusive United Nations basis to create a genuinely national voice and obtain programming from any Australian broadcaster or independent producer with relevant content, including the national broadcaster and the private sector,” SKY CEO Angelos Frangopoulos said.

Sky News failed in its bid to operate the channel in 2005.

“He (Frangopoulos) just wants more money to run his operation,” Mark Scott said. “There is no advantage for taxpayers in squeezing the ABC out of roles that it is best placed to deliver.”
